Description
Black and white photo of partially completed Great Northern Railway Bridge over Salmon Bay. Photo taken near the North Abutment. The girder spans in North approach to the Bascule tower have been placed. The derrick at the left hand side of photo carries the steel members to the tower where they are hoisted into place by the "gin" poles. THe counterweight truss is not in place so neither is the counterweight. Two tracks are under the bridge. The near track is used to bring in construction materials. The far track is Great Northern Main Line, which crosses the waterway near the 15th Avenue NW Highway bridge. Gears and other machinery are on the bridge. Present NW 54th Street crosses under the span that has gears piled on it.
